"Periphéro" is ancient Greek for something that turns around or revolves. It is something that is not quite right, upside down or not quite centered. Nowadays, we generally use the term "periphery" for the outskirts or fringe areas that are not central but lie on the edge of a city. (...) If we broaden the concept a bit further, in architecture, "periphery" for me is also a kind of transitional space between "inside" and "outside," like the space of a hallway. Botanical gardens turn the game around in their greenhouses: the artificial nature of the tropics grows and thrives magnificently for us visitors. They bring the outside, the distant and exotic, inside to us. Perhaps "periphery" is also an intermediate state. A newspaper that was once up-to-date and is now slowly turning into compost. (...) In medicine, peripheral body parts are those that are far from the center of the body. What if my tailor's hands could tell stories? If they could tell us how many seams they have ripped, how many garments they have folded, how many shirts they have ironed, and how many zippers they have attached? I believe they would have a lot to tell us. (...)
